Haze Risk Returns: Singapore PSI Forecast Moderate to Low Unhealthy
Fires in Kalimantan and southern Sumatra have put haze back on the forecast. Current readings and what NEA advises.
Haze is back on Singapore’s radar. The National Environment Agency (NEA) forecast the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) to be in the Moderate to Low Unhealthy range, as fires in Kalimantan and southern Sumatra continued to send out moderate to dense smoke plumes.
Where readings stood
As of 6pm on Thursday 24 September, the 24-hour PSI ranged from 62 to 76, in the Moderate band, and the one-hour PM2.5 readings were 17 to 27 µg/m³, in the Normal band. Showers fell over northern parts of the island in the afternoon.
Why the risk remains
NEA said dry conditions were expected to persist over south-eastern Sumatra and south-western Kalimantan, even as showers are forecast over Singapore and parts of the region. With winds forecast to blow from the east-southeast or southeast, smoke from those areas could drift towards Singapore.
What to do
- Healthy adults: carry on as normal while the 24-hour PSI is Moderate. If it reaches Unhealthy, cut down on prolonged or strenuous outdoor exertion.
- Elderly people, pregnant women and children: normal activities at Moderate; minimise prolonged or strenuous outdoor exertion at Unhealthy.
- People with chronic lung or heart disease: normal activities at Moderate; avoid prolonged or strenuous outdoor exertion at Unhealthy.
